About Us

We are a not-for-profit organisation advocating for people with intellectual disabilities, funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Social Development and community sponsors.

What is Citizen Advocacy?

Citizen advocacy is a movement designed to support people with disabilities in achieving independence and fulfilling lives. It is based on the principle that everyone should have their voice heard and their rights respected.

The Citizen Advocacy movement, initiated by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger in the United States in 1966, aims to protect and promote the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. It evolved from discussions about the difficulties faced by disabled people and seeks to foster a sense of belonging and connection within communities. The first programme was launched in 1970, and since then, it has expanded internationally, inspiring initiatives such as Citizen Advocacy Auckland, established in 1990. By pairing volunteers with people with disabilities, the movement strives to ensure that everyone has a voice and the necessary support to pursue their goals and advocate for inclusivity.
